U3 SMART DRIVES |
|
Soon you'll be able to
carry your entire computer on your keychain. Those handy
little USB flash drives that are being used to store files
are becoming even more useful with the added capability to
carry the programs you need to access those files. |
|
Leading flash drive
providers are now incorporating software from U3 that adds
applications to them creating what is known as a "Smart
Drives". A U3-powered USB Smart Drive lets you carry
software programs and data on a USB flash drive so that you
can launch software and access all of your own data on any
Windows XP or Windows 2000 PC. computer. Be sure the Smart
Drive has the U3 label on it or you won't be able to use it
to store programs. Just plug
your U3 Smart Drive into any Windows based computer and it
will work just like your own computer - complete with all
the same software and settings. You can access your
programs, files, browse the Internet, Instant Message, even
check your email - exactly the same as if you were on your
own personal computer.
It may very well be that in the near
future computers will only contain an operating system -
like Windows - and serve only as a docking station for Smart
Drives.
There are a number of benefits to
Smart Drives...
- Because you can take your
programs and files with you when you unplug the Smart
Drive, it leaves behind no traces.
- In an environment where computer
access is shared, each individual can create their own
computing preference on their Smart Drive. Since programs
and files stay on the Smart Drive - rather than the
computer's hard drive - one user won't be able to access
another user's files or programs. What's more, if one user
has picked up a computer virus, it won't be able to infect
other users' files.
- The relatively low cost of Smart
Drives makes it possible to own several of U3 Smart Drives
- one for each different need - such as work, financial
planning, photos, gaming, etc. Prices vary depending on
the vendor so you should take the time to comparison shop.
Amazon currently lists a Verbatim U3 Smart Drive with 4 GB
for only $135. Smaller, 1 GB drives are available for $30
or less.
- The Smart Drive can be equipped
with data encryption and password protection, to protect
your files and information if you should lose your Smart
Drive.
- You can install a costly program
on your U3 Smart Drive and use it on all of your computers
- no more need to purchase multiple copies of software so
it can legally be used on more than one computer.
And, there are few drawbacks...
- The small size that makes it so
handy, also makes it easy to lose. While the Smart Drive
can be password protected and encrypted, lost data is
still lost data and losing a Smart Drive with data on it
that you need to get your work done could be a serious
problem.
- At this time, you can't just load
any old software onto your U3 Smart Drive. It will only
take applications that are specifically developed for the
U3 platform. Hover, there are already an impressive number
of programs available and the list continues to grow. You
can view the programs that are currently available at (http://software.u3.com).
- If you're not careful, you can
permanently damage a Smart Drive by not removing it
correctly from a computer. You need to be sure to click on
the an Eject button before removing the Smart Drive. The
Launchpad program that comes with the Smart Drive will
walk you through it. It's important to note that this is a
hazard with ALL USB flash drives - not just the U3 enabled
Smart Drives. Microsoft terms this a "surprise removal of
hardware". Before removing any flash drive from your
computer you should click through the Safely Remove
Hardware applet to stop the device before you remove it.
You may get by dozens of times with not problems by just
pulling your flash drive out of the USB port - but the
risk of damage is real, and could happen at any time.
- At this time U3 Smart Drives are
only Windows compatible so Mac users are out of luck
for the time being.
U3 Smart Drives are changing the way
we work and this is just the beginning. |
