TABLET PCs
A Tablet PC can let you conveniently work just about anywhere and can virtually eliminate the need for paper.
What is a Tablet PC? It's a fully-functional laptop computer in the form of a notebook or a slate that can be written on through the use of digitizing tablet technology or a touch screen. You can use the pen directly on the screen just as you would a mouse to do things like select, drag, and open files; or in place of a keyboard to write notes and communication. Because a Tablet PC screen only receives information from a special pen (or stylus) you can safely rest your hand or arm on the screen while writing. Tablet PCs typically include wireless Internet support, an anti-glare screen and an extended life battery.

Interacting directly with the screen makes your PC as comfortable and easy to use as writing on a pad of paper. You can even use it while you are standing up, walking about, or seated behind the wheel of your parked vehicle. It's a terrific tool for mobile business professionals such as Realtors, appraisers and inspectors.

Free yourself from paper - you can easily write handwritten notes or complete and sign forms electronically and all your documents will be easily searchable on your Tablet PC. Just think of how much time that will save you!

Every Tablet PC comes equipped with the Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system as well as an application called the Windows Journal - which is in effect a digital piece of paper - allowing you to take notes (even in different colors), highlight passages, and even fill out forms. Your clients can sign the form on the spot and you can email it to them for their records.

The Tablet PC Input Panel can quickly convert your handwriting to text. However, you can leave your notes in their handwritten format if you prefer as the Tablet PC can understand and search through words and phases in both formats. You can email your handwritten notes, drawing, presentations, etc. and even sign your emails with your own handwritten signature. You can also change or mark up Word documents or PowerPoint presentations.

There are many third party software applications available for Tablet PCs that will further increase your productivity. Here are a few places to start:

  • PhatWare (www.phatware.com) specializes in handwriting recognition, digital ink, note taking, and database and network management software development.
  • Tablet PC Post (www.tabletpcpost.com) offers downloads for utilities and business productivity software.
  • VREO (www.vreo.com) provides software solutions to real estate brokers, agents and franchise organizations.

With three different types of Tablet PCs available, you're sure to find one to fit your need. Choose from...

  • The Convertible Tablet PC which has an attached keyboard and looks like a conventional laptop. The Convertible Tablet PC lets you rotate the screen 180 degrees and lay it flat over the keyboard for comfortable reading and writing.
  • The Slate Tablet PC is designed to be slim and ultra-light without a permanent keyboard. Some models come with a detachable keyboard, and all include innovative docking solutions that offer access to a full-size monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
  • The Rugged Tablet PC is a tough mobile computer with an industrial-strength shell and shock-mounted hard drive. Rugged models are ideal for people who use their PC in outdoor conditions or simply need a PC that is ultra durable.

Before purchasing your Tablet PC, be sure to thoroughly test drive a number of them to get the feel of how they will function for you in your "real world" application.  You can research Tablet PCs online at Tablet PC Talk (www.tabletpctalk.com), PC Mag (www.pcmag.com) and CNET (www.cnet.com).
