DiskOnKey is a tiny hard
drive with no moving parts that
doesn't need power or batteries. The nonvolatile flash
memory stores data safely for up to 10 years. DiskOnKey is
about the size of a small highlighter and the 32MB size and
can hold the equivalent of 22 floppy disks!
Let’s say you’re working on a
file at the office. You need to take the file home to work
on it but it’s 10MB. You have a floppy disk drive at home
and in the office, but the file is too big for a floppy. You
could compress it, but that's time consuming and you need
the compression software. You have a Zip
drive at the office, but
not at home. You could e-mail the file to yourself, but
downloading the file at home would take a long time - not to
mention having to email it back to work again.
If you have a USB port on
both computers, you can easily use DiskOnKey.
Just plug it in to the USB port on your office
computer and it will instantly be recognized as a disk
drive. Copy the file to DiskOnKey and unplug it. Take it
home and plug it into the USB port on your home computer
(Yes, even if it’s a Mac!) and DiskOnKey will instantly be
detected as a supplementary removable disk and assigned a
drive letter. DiskOnKey supports complete and instantaneous
plug and play interoperability on the latest Windows®, Mac®,
OS and Linux® operating systems, with no software drivers
required.
To move the file between your
computer and DiskOnKey, just drag-and-drop. Edit your file,
return it to DiskOnKey, and take it back to the office. What
could be easier?
The first time you plug
personal storage device in to your Windows computer, you’ll
see the "found new hardware" dialog box. After 30 seconds or
so, the new drive will be mounted and ready. To remove the
disk, you should stop the device (2 mouse clicks). When you
plug DiskOnKey in the next time, it will automatically mount
in about 2 seconds. The process is similar on a Mac: Plug it
in an it almost instantly shows up on the desktop. To remove
it, drag the icon to the trash. Once the device is
installed, you can copy files from it to your computer or
from the computer to it by dragging and dropping. In every
way, it’s just like a disk drive.
DiskOnKey's patented design
makes it the only one with a built-in central processing
unit (CPU). This allows for future applications and provides
an automatic boot function for computers running the widely
used Phoenix BIOS (Basic Input Output System).
Speed is another plus for
DiskOnKey with 1MB/second read or write data transfer.
More secure than a write-protect switch, DiskOnKey offers a
unique KeySafe utility, downloadable from the Web site. With
it, a user can set aside up to 90 percent of the unit's
memory for a password protected
"Privacy Zone."
The optional DiskOnKey Docking Station ($20) is an
easy-to-use socket, custom-made for your DiskOnKey, that can
sit on your desktop or in any other convenient location.
Connected by cable to your computer's USBconnector, the
docking station enables you to work with your DiskOnKey
without having to access your computer's back panel. Just
plug in your DiskOnKey to the docking station and begin
working as usual. You can store files or use any of
DiskOnKey's added value applications such as KeySafe. |

At $63 the 32MB size is a lot
less expensive than buying two Zip drives. It's also a lot
more convenient. DiskOnKey sports a key ring and pocket clip
on the cap, and is available on line at its Web site or
through Dell, Compaq, and IBM. DiskOnKey is currently
available in 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 and 512MB capacities
sizes. Suggested prices range from 8MB for $30 to 512GB for
$500. |
